Can you still charge late payment fees months after an invoice has been paid?

If a client withheld payment on a number of invoices, eventually paying but not after a few months past the deadline; can you still charge interest and compensation a number of months after these were paid, or is there a time limit on when you can invoice for late payment fees, after the event?

I didn't charge them at the time as I was still awaiting payment for additional work done last month, and didn't want to give them another excuse to withhold payment again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Joel
You have up to 6 years (5 in Scotland) to claim retrospective interest and compensation on each invoice that was paid but not paid within agreed terms or the legislation's default of 30 days.
This is based on the limitations act 1980. The link is below.

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1980/58

I hope that helps.

Best regards

David
