Applying interest without invoices

I had arranged for some work by a solicitor who did not perform as instructed.
They sent me invoices while they were doing the work and I was paying a fixed amount to pay off the debt owed.
But several years ago, the invoices stopped. I asked on several occasions for a detailed breakdown of the amount owed and received nothing.
They finally sent a short letter with a total (not a breakdown as requested, and only after threats) with an 8% interest added from the beginning.
Is this legal?

While I can't comment on the validity or not of the solicitors charges. I can help you with the interest. If you can show that the invoices were disputed or queried and they never responded; Or if indeed you hadn't received the invoices then that would be justification for refusing to pay the interest.
