If a sole trader supplier has been declared bankrupt since the debt was raised, have i any recourse?

They were trading as an entertainer when the debt was raised, but now trade as a sole trader in construction.

Should i seek letters confirming the bankruptcy?

So, you have dealt with an individual, lets call him Mr Bloggs.

You invoiced Mr Bloggs Trading As Bloggs Entertainment at some point in the past. This invoice is unpaid.

After the invoice is issued Mr Bloggs is declared bankrupt.

If the above is the situation, you are pretty much out of options. As when the bankruptcy took effect all previous debts are effectively erased.

Thanks, but I assume I don't just take their word for it and can get some sort of evidence to prove their bankruptcy claim?

Hi Nick.

No definitely don't just take their word for it!

You can check the London gazette for details of the bankruptcy here:

www.london-gazette.co.uk/

In the keyword box put the debtors name and post code and it should bring up the notification of when and where the bankruptcy was formalised.

If it doesn't appear in the gazette you need to speak to the Official Receiver/Trustee to confirm this is the case. The debtor should have those details.
